They have an amazing river access on the South Fork American which makes an ideal base camp with clamping style camping options (though I prefer tent camping or under the stars right next to the river which is also an option).
The South Fork is one of many rivers they run, but close enough to Sacramento for easy access.
It is 21 miles total (usually broken up into either Chili Bar or the Gorge- the upper or lower). The rapids are family friendly but still provide excitement. This is a great place to dip your toes into whitewater.
