Located approximately 3 hours north of Los Angeles in Kernville, Sierra South Mountain Sports offers a variety of outdoor adventures, including whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Operating from mid-March through November, we cater to all skill levels with trips ranging from half-day excursions to multi-day adventures.

What We Offer

Rafting:

Short Trips (1.5 to 4 Hours)

  • Beginner Trips (Class II–III) – Enjoy a variety of beginner-friendly rafting options perfect for families and first-timers, including the 1.5-hour Lickety Split, the popular 2–3 hour Lickety Blaster, and the 3–4 hour Lower Kern Half Day—no experience needed.
  • Intermediate Trips (Class IV) – For those seeking more excitement, choose from two thrilling 3–4 hour adventures: the Lower Kern Half Day, one of the best Class IV trips, or the Upper Kern Half Day, a fast-paced option for adrenaline lovers.

Full-Day Trips (6 to 12 Hours)

  • Beginner Full-Day Trips (Class II–III) – These 6–8 hour experiences are available exclusively for scout troops, featuring the Lower Kern Full Day and the Full Day Whitewater Merit Badge, both offering safe, beginner-level rafting with a focus on learning and adventure.
  • Intermediate Full-Day Trips (Class IV) – Experience a full day of adrenaline and stunning scenery with the Upper Kern Full Day and Lower Kern Full Day trips, each offering 6–8 hours of Class IV whitewater excitement.

Overnight Trips (2 Days)

  • Beginner to Intermediate Overnight Trip (Class II–IV) – The Lower Kern 2 Day adventure covers 21 miles of whitewater over two days, featuring thrilling rapids, cliff jumping, swimming spots, and private riverside camping for a well-rounded outdoor experience.
  • Advanced Overnight Trip (Class IV–V) – The Forks of the Kern 2 Day offers an unforgettable adventure with some of the world’s most challenging rapids and breathtaking views of the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, perfect for experienced rafters seeking a true wilderness experience.

What to Know Before You Go

Age & Skill Requirements:

  • Beginner Trips: Suitable for individuals aged 6 and above. No prior experience required.

  • Intermediate Trips: Participants must be at least 12 years old, with a weight range between 90–275 lbs. Good swimming ability is highly recommended especially during higher flows.

  • Advanced Trips: Specific age and skill requirements may vary by trip. Please consult the individual trip details or contact Sierra South directly for more information.

What to Bring:

  • Quick-Dry Clothing: Wear light clothing suitable for swimming and sun protection. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture.

  • Secure Footwear: Appropriate footwear includes tennis shoes, water shoes, or sandals with a heel strap. Flip-flops and bare feet are not permitted.

  • Sun Protection: Bring sunscreen, a hat (such as a baseball cap or visor), and sunglasses with a retainer strap to protect against the sun.

  • Change of Clothes: You will get wet! It’s advisable to bring dry clothes for after your trip.

  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential. Bring a water bottle to ensure you have access to water throughout your adventure.

Additional Recommendations:

  • Avoid Bringing Valuables: It’s recommended to leave valuables, including car keys, in your vehicle or at home to prevent loss or damage.

  • Wetsuits: Depending on the season and water conditions, wetsuits may be required and are available to rent.
