6 Easy Ways to Bring More Adventure Into Your Life This Year

Because adventure doesn’t start with big plans, it starts with one small choice.

Give Yourself Permission to Be a Beginner

Adventure is often stopped before it starts, not by time or money, but by the belief that you need to already “know how” or “look like” you belong.

Maybe you’ve thought:

  • I’m not outdoorsy enough…

  • What if I’m the only beginner there?

  • I’ll wait until I’m better prepared…

The truth is: no one begins confident.  Give yourself permission to show up not knowing everything.
Ask questions. Take the beginner lesson. Stand in line with other first-timers, and remember, every expert started where you are.

Try One New Thing Each Month

Adventure often begins with something small, a single moment where you step outside your routine. One new experience, even a low-stakes one, can open a door you didn’t know was there. The goal isn’t to overhaul your life, it’s simply to start.

If you’re not sure where to begin, pick one small action and try it this month:

Try:

  • A sunrise walk before work

  • Your first indoor climbing session

  • Renting an e-bike to explore town

  • Skiing, snowmobiling, or trying a winter sport you’ve never done

Make One Big Adventure Goal

It’s easy to say “one day”, but adventure becomes real when you choose something meaningful, give it a timeline, and map out how you’ll get there. Think of this as your anchor adventure…the thing you’ll look forward to all year.

Pick something big, something that excites you or even scares you a little.  Then make it real using this quick 3-step plan:

  1. Define it clearly
    Not “learn to kayak,” but:
“By August, I want to confidently paddle Class III whitewater.
  2. Break it into small steps
    • Research clinics or join a group

    • Take an intro class

    • Practice in flatwater or a pool

    • Run the goal river with a guide or group

  3. Put it on a calendar
Write it down. Set a date. Tell someone.
Goals become real when they have a time attached.

Join a New Group or Program

A lot of adventures never happen simply because they’re optional, they rely on motivation. One of the easiest ways to make adventure part of your life is to join something that gives you a time, place, and people to show up with.

Try one of these this year:

  • Join a climbing gym or grab a punch pass

  • Sign up for a local paddling or kayaking club (many welcome beginners and trust us, people love to share their knowledge)

  • Join a weekly ski, hiking, or trail running group-Facebook is a great place to find local meetups!

  •  Head to your local REI and attend a presentation, workshop, or event — many are free and take place all across the country

Make Plans With People

Adventure is better when it’s shared. Instead of waiting for the perfect plan to appear, be the one to start it, call or text a friend and say:

“Pick a day, let’s try something new.”

From there, keep the plan simple and doable. It doesn’t need to be big, it just needs to happen. Connection fuels consistency, and making plans with people is one of the easiest ways to bring more adventure into your life.

Choose one small thing that works for both of you: a short hike, a sunrise coffee walk, a first-time climbing session, or even booking a tour together. It doesn’t need to be big, it just needs to happen.

If planning feels overwhelming, try this format:

  • One person chooses the date

  • The other chooses the activity

  • Keep it under 3 hours so it feels doable

Document Your Adventures

Documenting your adventures gives you a fun reminder that you’re keeping up with your goals. It can hold you accountable, and it builds confidence and momentum over time.

How to do this:

  • Track your adventures in your phone or a journal

  • Make a mini monthly photo album or recap reel

  • Write down three moments each month that made you feel adventurous

  • Keep a running list or “logbook” of places you’ve been — it’ll be fun to look back at everything you’ve done
