A Day at Cave of the Winds:

Colorado Springs Adventure for the Whole Family

We spent the day at Cave of the Winds Mountain Park alongside Trip Uhalt, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for Cave of the Winds, and Sandy Bobal Zuniga of Colorado Springs Town Tidings. From the Via Ferrata and ropes course to the iconic Terror-Dactyl, we experienced firsthand why this Colorado Springs landmark has been welcoming families and adventurers since 1881.

Few attractions have been part of Colorado Springs history as long as Cave of the Winds. Since opening to visitors in 1881, the attraction has welcomed generations of explorers, families, and adventure seekers to experience the beauty of Williams Canyon and one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks.

This week, we had the opportunity to spend the day at Cave of the Winds Mountain Park with Trip Uhalt, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for Cave of the Winds, and Sandy Bobal Zuniga, founder of Colorado Springs Town Tidings. Sandy has a passion for connecting people with the businesses and experiences that make Colorado Springs special, and we’re grateful she helped bring everyone together for what turned out to be an unforgettable day.

While many visitors know Cave of the Winds for its historic cave tours, we spent our day exploring the outdoor adventures throughout the park, and there was no shortage of things to do.

Our first stop was the Via Ferrata, a guided climbing experience that follows the canyon walls of Williams Canyon. What stood out most was how approachable the experience felt. The guides were friendly and patient, the safety systems were easy to understand, and the route offered incredible views of the canyon below. Whether you’re an experienced adventurer or trying something completely new, it felt like an activity almost anyone could enjoy.

From there, we made our way to the ropes course and zip line. Both provided just the right amount of challenge while remaining family-friendly and accessible. Throughout the day, one thing became clear: Cave of the Winds has done an exceptional job creating adventures that are exciting without being intimidating.

Of course, one of the highlights of the day was the Terror-Dactyl.

Perched high above Williams Canyon, this unique ride launches guests out over the canyon while offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. More than anything, it was just so much fun. The combination of laughter, beautiful scenery, and shared excitement made it one of those attractions that appeals to both kids and adults alike.

Between activities, we enjoyed lunch and had the chance to learn more about the history of Cave of the Winds. What began as a cave discovery in the early 1880s quickly became one of Colorado’s earliest tourist attractions. More than 140 years later, the park continues to evolve while maintaining the sense of wonder that first drew visitors to the canyon.

One of the things we appreciated most throughout the day was the atmosphere. The staff was welcoming, the guides clearly enjoyed what they do, and the entire park had an energy that made it easy to relax and enjoy the experience.

Ironically, the one thing we didn’t get a chance to do was explore the caves themselves, which means we’ll definitely be back.

After spending a full day at Cave of the Winds, it’s easy to understand why it remains one of Colorado Springs’ most beloved attractions. Whether you’re looking for a family outing, entertaining visitors from out of town, planning a group activity, or simply searching for something fun to do outdoors, Cave of the Winds offers an experience that is accessible, memorable, and uniquely Colorado.

And next time, we’ll make it underground!
